Privacy Policy
Last updated: 16 August 2026
The short version
- We set no cookies and run no advertising trackers. There is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.
- The only personal data we deliberately store is an email address, and only if you subscribe to the newsletter.
- Traffic measurement is cookieless and cannot identify you.
- We never sell your data, and we do not process any special category data.
Who is responsible for your data
ModWheel.net operates this website and is the data controller for the processing described here.
Our full legal name and postal address are not yet published on this page. Until they are, you can reach the controller at hello@modwheel.net, and we will supply those details on request.
We have not appointed a Data Protection Officer, as we are not required to.
What we process, why, and on what basis
Newsletter subscription
Data: your email address, the date and time you subscribed, and a copy of the consent wording you agreed to.
Why: to send you occasional emails about new reviews and guides.
Legal basis: your consent, under Article 6(1)(a) GDPR. Giving it is entirely optional and nothing on this site depends on it. You can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email, or by emailing us; withdrawing does not affect the lawfulness of anything we did beforehand.
Retention: until you unsubscribe, plus a short period to action the request. We also remove addresses that have been inactive for 24 months.
Traffic measurement
Data: pages viewed, outbound links clicked, referring website, approximate country, and coarse browser and device type. Your IP address is used momentarily to derive the country and a rotating daily hash, and is not stored.
Why: to understand which articles are read and which recommendations are useful, so we know what to write next.
Legal basis: our legitimate interests in understanding and improving the site, under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR. We consider this proportionate because the measurement is cookieless, stores nothing on your device, builds no profile, and cannot be traced back to you. You can object at any time — see Your rights.
Retention: aggregate statistics are kept indefinitely. Because no identifier survives the daily salt rotation, these cease to be personal data very quickly.
Hosting and security
Data: our host records standard server logs, including IP addresses, when pages are served.
Why: to deliver the site and to defend it against abuse.
Legal basis: our legitimate interests in operating a functioning, secure website, under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.
Retention: as set by our host, typically a matter of days.
Videos you choose to play
Pages containing a video do not contact Google unless you press play. If you do, Google receives your IP address and may set cookies, on the basis of the consent you give by clicking. See our Cookie Policy for the detail.
Who else sees your data
We do not sell your personal data, and we do not share it for anyone else's marketing. We rely on the following processors:
- Netlify — website hosting and the newsletter form. Newsletter submissions are stored in our Netlify account. Netlify is based in the United States.
- Umami — cookieless traffic measurement, on a plan configured to keep our analytics data in the European Union.
We may also disclose information where the law requires it.
Transfers outside the EEA
Netlify processes data in the United States. Those transfers are covered by the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses together with Netlify's Data Processing Addendum. You can ask us for a copy of the safeguards that apply.
Affiliate links
Many product links on this site are affiliate links, which means we may earn a commission if you buy something, at no extra cost to you. This never influences which products we recommend. We do not pass any personal data to retailers; once you follow a link, that retailer's own privacy policy governs what happens next.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- ask what personal data we hold about you, and get a copy;
- have inaccurate data corrected;
- have your data erased;
- restrict how we use it;
- receive data you gave us in a portable, machine-readable format;
- object to processing we base on legitimate interests, including our traffic measurement;
- withdraw consent at any time, where consent is the basis we rely on.
Email hello@modwheel.net to exercise any of these. We will respond within one month, and it costs you nothing. In practice, for most visitors we hold nothing at all, so there may be nothing to send.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to your national data protection authority. In France that is the CNIL; elsewhere in the EEA, your local equivalent.
Automated decision-making
We do not carry out automated decision-making or profiling that produces legal or similarly significant effects.
Children
This site is aimed at people working in music production and is not directed at children. We do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16.
Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle your data, we will update this page and the date at the top. Where a change materially affects processing based on your consent, we will ask you again rather than assume.
