The original Oberheim 8-Voice was not one synthesizer, it was eight identical monophonic SEM units triggered together by a polyphonic keyboard. GForce's OB-E models that architecture note for note rather than approximating the result, and it is the reason Tom Oberheim himself put his name on it.
What Is Actually In It
Each of the eight voices carries its own emulated SEM, meaning two VCOs with pulse and sawtooth waveforms, two ADS envelope generators, one LFO and a multi-mode filter, independently controllable. Mono, Mono Legato, Poly, Unison and Split keyboard modes are all available, alongside velocity, polyphonic aftertouch and MPE support.
Version 2 added a Vintage control that reintroduces the original hardware's musical inaccuracies, a refined Detune parameter, a new reverb and over 100 new patches, bringing the library past 700 presets. A Drum Mode lets each SEM be triggered as its own drum voice, with ten kit presets included, plus an 8-step sequencer carried over from the original MS-1.
Why Eight Separate Voices Sounds Different
A single oscillator stack detuned against itself is the usual way plugins fake width. OB-E does not fake it, because each of the eight voices is its own modeled analogue circuit with its own drift and imperfection, and stacking eight of those produces a thickness a detuned unison patch on a single-engine synth cannot quite reach.

The Real Costs
Running eight independent analogue emulations per voice is heavier on CPU than a typical subtractive synth, and a template running several instances for layered pads will feel it before a simpler synth would. The per-voice detail is also largely wasted on single-note lines, where a cheaper synth does the same job for less load.
The interface leans toward the vintage 8-Voice layout rather than a modern one, so anyone expecting a large modulation matrix or extensive routing will find less to work with than a flagship wavetable instrument offers.
