The call

Buy it if your template has no dedicated percussion library and you have the disk space free. Skip it if you cannot spare around 86GB, or if you have decided never to install another sample player.

An independent review, and the useful one for hearing the library in context. “East West Quantum Leap Stormdrum 3 (Review by Meena Shamaly)” by FilmandGameComposers, on YouTube. Playing it loads the video from Google.

The interesting number is not the discount. It is that a library recorded from the private percussion collections of Mickey Hart and Remo, with five microphone positions on every instrument, costs less than a single expansion pack for most orchestral libraries.

What Is Actually In It

The content splits into a Taiko family, big drums, gongs and metals, shakers, small drums and woods, with performances recorded by working percussionists rather than assembled from single hits. EastWest state over 150 instruments.

For a composer that breadth matters more than any single drum. A cue that needs a taiko ostinato, a gong swell and a shaker layer is one library rather than three purchases.

The Five Microphone Positions

Close, mid, a cleaner modern position, a Decca tree main and a vintage ribbon set. That is unusual at any price and close to unheard of at this one.

It matters in a specific way. A percussion hit that sits too far forward in a cue can be pulled back by rebalancing toward the tree rather than by drowning it in reverb, and the second approach is what makes most home-made percussion sound wrong.

The Two Real Costs

The install is around 86GB and EastWest recommend a fast drive. On a mechanical disk a large template with this in it becomes unpleasant, and budgeting an SSD alongside the purchase is sensible.

The other is Opus. This is EastWest's own player rather than Kontakt, which means a separate installer, a separate library manager and articulation handling that will not match maps you already have. Some composers refuse that on principle and it is a reasonable position.

The Price You Will See

The figures above are feed prices, which is what the cards across this site quote. Your region may show the same offer with VAT applied, so checkout can read higher. The percentage is the same either way.

Worth It At This Price

At around fifty euros this is difficult to argue against for anyone whose template has no serious percussion in it. The question is disk space rather than money.

If you already own a modern hybrid percussion library you like, this adds acoustic breadth rather than a missing capability, which is a weaker case. The cheaper end of the field is in the drum libraries under 70 roundup.
