Worth it if your hybrid cues need weight under an orchestra and your current synth runs out of size before it runs out of notes. Skip it if you already own a modern wavetable synth, because the overlap is larger than the price difference.

Spire has been around long enough that most coverage of it is a decade old, which is a poor guide to whether it belongs in a scoring template today. The engine is the reason to look, and the interface is the reason most composers never do.
What It Is Good At
Four oscillators, each of which can run as a classic analogue shape, a noise source, an FM operator or an AMSync source, with unison available across the lot. That combination produces the kind of wide, heavy, slightly unstable low end that sits under a brass hit without disappearing into it.
For a trailer cue or a hybrid action sequence that is the specific job, and Spire does it with fewer moves than a modular-style synth needs. The presets get you most of the way and the macros finish it.
What It Is Not
It is not a sound design environment. Compared with a modern wavetable synth there is less to route, fewer modulation destinations and no scripting, so the patches you can reach are the ones the architecture already suggests.
The interface has also aged. Everything is on one panel, which is fast once learned and dense on first sight, and the type is small enough to be a real problem on a laptop.

The Overlap Question
Most composers reading this already own something that covers part of this ground. If that is a wavetable synth with a deep modulation matrix, Spire adds a different character rather than a missing capability, and at any price that is a weaker case.
If what you own is a preset-driven instrument that thins out when you ask it for weight, the gap is real and this closes it.
The Price You Will See
The figures above are feed prices, which is what the cards across this site quote. Your region may show the same offer with VAT applied, so checkout can read higher. The discount is the same either way.
At this price it is an easy addition to a template that needs low end. The wider field is in the cinematic bass synth roundup.
