Realism

Ample Guitar M is a deeply sampled Martin dreadnought, and at close range that is audible in a way no model currently matches — the body resonance, the wound-string squeak, the different timbre of the same chord voiced further up the neck. Programmed carefully it is difficult to identify as a sample library.

Strum GS-2 is a physical model, and it carries the slightly synthetic edge that models still have on plucked strings. Under a dense mix nobody notices. Solo and exposed, someone who plays guitar will.

Playability

This reverses completely.

Strum GS-2 is built for a keyboard player. Hold a chord, choose a pattern, and it voices the shape the way a guitarist would finger it rather than the way a pianist would — which is the single most common reason a programmed guitar part sounds wrong. You get a usable take in the time it takes to load it.

Unlike the pattern-based libraries I often use for quick backings, Ample Guitar M allows me to program every single note, slide, and hammer-on manually. I turn to this instrument whenever I need a featured acoustic solo or a very specific intricate folk picking pattern that pre-recorded loops simply can't cover. I used it to program a complex acoustic intro for a rock song, and the level of control over the string squeaks and release noises made it sound frighteningly real and detailed.

The depth of sampling here is astounding. I spent hours tweaking the 'Capo' logic to ensure the virtual guitarist was playing in the correct position on the neck, which completely changed the timbre of the chords. It requires more effort than a strumming engine, but for a detailed production where the guitar is front and center-like a 'singer-songwriter' demo-Ample Guitar M puts the control back in my hands entirely. Unlike generous sample libraries, Strum GS-2 creates sound from scratch.

Modeling technology often sounds fake to my ears, but Strum GS-2 genuinely surprised me with its dynamic response. Because it models the physics of a string rather than relying on static samples, it offers infinite articulation possibilities that I found incredible for a recent experimental project. I was able to automate the 'pick position' mid-performance, creating a shifting tonal character that is simply impossible to achieve with a standard stiff sample library.

I used this on a keyboard-heavy project where the client wanted "guitar-like" textures but didn't want a generic acoustic sound. Strum GS-2 allowed me to play complex guitar voicings naturally on my keyboard, and the internal chord logic translated my keyboard block chords into realistic open guitar voicings automatically. It is a fantastic tool for pianists and keyboard players who want to think like a guitarist without learning the physical instrument. Where it sits against the rest of this list: Strum GS-2 is the only physically modelled instrument here, and that is the reason to consider it. Nothing is sampled: the string behaviour is computed, which means the install is a few megabytes rather than a few gigabytes, it loads instantly, and every parameter is continuous rather than snapped to whatever was recorded. You can change string material, pick position and body size and hear the tone move plausibly. The tradeoff is honest and well known: modelling still loses to good sampling on the raw believability of an exposed, solo part. Treat it as the instrument for arrangements where the guitar sits in a busy mix and you need it to bend to the track.
