IK Multimedia MODO BASS 2 Review

MODO BASS 2 builds a bass guitar from physics rather than recordings. What that makes possible, where the synthetic edge shows, and who it actually suits.

Verdict

Buy it if you want to shape a bass tone rather than choose one, and if the part sits inside an arrangement. The physical model gives you controls no sample library can offer, at 200 MB. It is the wrong tool for an exposed, naked bass line, where the missing air is audible.

MODO BASS 2

Best for Speed Metal

Tested in our studio

Featured at Plugin Boutique

The only bass here built from physics rather than recordings, giving you infinite tonal variety at 200 MB, though the synthetic edge shows on exposed parts.

How it scored

  • Realism 6.5

Convincing in a dense mix, but lacks the 'air' of a real recording.

  • Playability 8.5

Loads instantly and the pickup/string controls respond in real time.

  • Articulation Range 9.0

Infinite, since the model generates rather than plays back samples.

  • Footprint 10.0

200 MB. Nothing else here is even close.

Why we picked it

Producers who want to sculpt every aspect of the physics. You can move the pickup an inch to the left, which is impossible with samples.

Who should skip it

You hate synthetic textures. While flexible, it lacks the 'air' and grit of a real audio recording.

The good

  • Infinite variety
  • Zero hard drive space
  • Fast loading

The bad

  • Can sound synthetic
  • High end excitement missing
  • CPU spikes

Why it scored that way

The smallest file size, the biggest flexibility.

MODO BASS is unique because it doesn't use recordings. It models the physical properties of the string, the pickup, and the wood mathematically. This means you can do things that are impossible with samples, like moving the pickup position in real-time or changing the age of the strings from "New" to "Broken In." I use this for prototyping basslines because the file size is tiny and it loads instantly, unlike the massive sample libraries that take minutes to purge.

For metal, the "Metal" model (based on a Dingwall Combustion) is surprisingly convincing in a dense mix, because the synthesized engine never produces that "machine gun" effect on fast repeat notes that plagues even the best sample libraries. I used it on a speed metal track at 200 BPM, and the alternate picking engine handled the velocity changes without sounding robotic, though the high-end excitement of a real recording is noticeably absent on solo'd tracks.

Almost every virtual bass is a recording of a bass. MODO BASS 2 is a simulation of one: strings, body, pickups and the player’s hand, computed rather than played back. That single architectural decision explains everything good and bad about it.

What the model buys you

You can move the pickup. Not switch between two recorded pickup positions — move it, by an inch, and hear the harmonic content change continuously. You can change the number of strings, the fret material, the age of the strings, where along the string the finger plucks, and whether it is a finger, a pick or a thumb.

None of this is possible with samples, because samples would need every combination recorded. A library that offered this much variation would be measured in terabytes. This one is 200 MB and loads instantly.

For anyone who thinks about bass tone as something to sculpt, that is a genuinely different instrument rather than a cheaper one.

Where it falls down

Exposed. The model is convincing inside a dense arrangement and less so on its own, and the thing that goes missing is the air — the room, the amp, the small noise that says a microphone was present. A sampled bass carries that for free because it was recorded; a modelled one has to generate it and does not entirely.

On a metal mix with guitars either side of it, nobody will identify it. On a naked intro, someone will.

CPU

The trade for the tiny install is computation. It spikes harder than a sampler does, because the sound is being calculated rather than streamed. On a modern machine that is rarely a problem for one instance and is worth knowing about if a track carries several.

Playability

The controls respond in real time, which sounds like a small thing and changes how you work. Adjusting the plucking position while the loop plays and hearing it move is the kind of feedback that leads you somewhere, rather than the audition-load-audition cycle a large library imposes.

Who should buy it

Producers working on a laptop, collaborating remotely, or building demos where the bass has to be right rather than real. The size and the loading time are practical advantages that compound daily.

Anyone whose bass part is the feature should look at the sampled options first — the metal bass roundup covers them, and the same sampled-against-modelled decision plays out on acoustic guitar in Ample Guitar M against Strum GS-2.
